Professor of Law Emeritus Luz E. Nagle specializes in international law, international criminal law, transborder criminal law, and international human rights. Her career prior to joining academia includes having confronted narcotrafficking and political corruption as a young judge in Medellín, Colombia, practicing commercial and labor law in Colombian agribusiness, working as an undercover private investigator in Los Angeles, serving as a law clerk to the Supreme Court of Virginia, and pursuing software pirates in Microsoft Corporation's Latin America Copyright Enforcement Practice.

She has lectured at universities throughout the United States and internationally on topics related to international law, transborder crime, violence against women and vulnerable groups, and combating corruption and human trafficking. Professor Nagle was a 2019 Fulbright Senior Scholar at the Universidad de La Laguna Facultad de Derecho, Canary Islands. During Fall 2023 she taught an honors seminar on human trafficking in the The Judy Genshaft Honors College at the University of South Florida-St. Petersburg.

Professor Nagle has participated in government-sponsored rule of law, judicial reform, anti-corruption/transborder crime, and hemispheric security projects throughout Latin America. She advised the UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons to assess the vulnerability of communities to human trafficking during armed conflict. Most recently she has consulted on anti-human trafficking projects in the Eastern Caribbean and is helping Colombian judges improve competency when handling human trafficking cases.

Professor Nagle has held prominent positions in the International Bar Association, currently serving as a Trustee of the IBA’s Human Rights Institute Trust, and as a member of the Human Rights Law Committee. Professor Nagle's leadership engagement in the American Bar Association include her current appointment as Chair, ABA Rule of Law Initiative in Latin America and Caribbean, and membership on the ABA ROLI Council.

Professor Nagle holds an LL.D. from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (Colombia) with specializations in criminal law and sports law, a J.D. from the College of William & Mary in Virginia, an LL.M. in international law from UCLA School of Law, an M.A. in Latin American studies (law, political science, history) from the University of California at Los Angeles, and two certifications in national security law from the Center for National Security Law at the University of Virginia School of Law.
